Senator Jess Ericksen (John Griesemer) Emma's dad: liberal Vermont state senator. Supports progressive legislation like the civil union law and distrusts cops. Also a Vietnam vet who fools around with a colleague. Like every dad, he thinks he knows what's best for his daughter.

Rachel Ericksen (Rachel Bissex)Emma's mom: struggling to keep it together as a mom, housewife, singer/songwriter. Chronically depressed.

Lara (Siri Baruc) Emma's best friend: impulsive, sparkly. The other kids think she's a weirdo. Dreams of escaping to New York to be a dancer.

Lenny Ericksen (Doran Hamm) Emma's kid brother: a state house page, Emma's ally at home when they're not teasing each other, helps keep their mother from completely losing it.

Red Morisette (Rusty Dewees) a right wing state senator, Jess Ericksen's political foil at the state house. Thinks gays are taking over the state, doesn't like gun control. Fools you with his long red hair.

Emma's buddies:
Josh (Colin Gunn): hippy kid, blond curls, lives in his van, gay, or bi, plays wicked guitar. Jennifer (Ruby Ferm): one of those girls who wash their hair twice a day and wear pink. Ray (Justin Usle): in charge of buying the keg, with his chiseled features, he can stare anyone down. Taylor (Sam Chapin): the youngest, tags along with the older kids. Cards are his thing. Has a serious crush on Emma. Jimmy (Jacob Crumbine): the handsome jock type, was making out with Lara the night of the party, transformed by what happened -- but this isn't his story...
